What a horrible guy! I never had anyone like that although my first teacher
did teach me a lot of bad habits. (Things like: in about the third or
fourth lesson, when we were going to learn Low E and I instinctively put my
fingers in the right position using the right-handed fingering, she insisted
that I use the two-fingered version - right hand pinky on F key, left hand
pinky on E key - because otherwise I "wouldn't be able to hold the keys down
properly". At the age of 10 I took this amazingly seriously and it took me
a long time to throw out this stupid way of thinking...)

Still, I had trombonist friend whose teacher's method of testing for
adequate diaphragm support was to punch him in the stomach!
