Two CD recommendations:

1.
Antonio Casimir Cartellieri, played by Dieter Klocker and the Prague =
Chamber

Orchestra, Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm, MDG 301 0527-2
Released in 1996
Concerto No. 1 for Clarinet and Orchestra in B-flat major
Adagio Pastorale, from the otherwise lost Clarinet Concerto No. 2.
Concerto No. 3 for Clarinet and Orchestra in E-flat major

2.
Antonio Casimir Cartellieri, Wind Concertos, Volume 2 (all with Prague=20
Chamber Orchestra), Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm, MDG 301 =
0960-2
Released in 2000
Concerto for Two Clarinets and Orchestra in B-flat major (Dieter =
Klocker and

Sandra Arnold, clarinets)
Allegro aperto for Clarinet and Orchestra in B-flat (Klocker)
Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in G major (Kornelia Brandkamp, flute)

I'd never heard of Antonio Casimir Cartellieri (1771-1807) until these=20
recordings roused my curiosity. A search of the Klarinet archives =
today=20
turns up not one mention of Cartellieri; nor is his music mentioned in =
the=20
composers' database. Klarinet's Discography section lists the first=20
recording but not the second. =20

These musicians sound to me as though they all play (extremely well!) =
on=20
modern instruments. Clarinetist Dieter Klocker, Professor of Clarinet =
and=20
Wind Chamber Music at the State Academy of Music in Freiburg, Germany, =
wrote

the liner notes. He argues that Cartellieri wrote for clarinet, not =
basset,

although "Anton Stadler (1853-1812), Mozart's clarinetist friend, was =
also=20
Cartellieri's advisor while our composer was performing together with=20
Beethoven in Vienna." The demanding, virtuosic but melodic music =
speaks for

itself in arguing that this composer is an individualist, well worth=20
rediscovering. Sandra Arnold, one of Klocker's students, sounds worth=20
discovering, too!=20

These are technically excellent CDs with substantial, informative =
booklets.

Klocker's notes include a long quotation from Cartellieri's son's =
biography=20
of the composer. The first volume's booklet lists the names of all the =

personnel in the conductorless orchestra (founded in 1951 by members of =
the=20
Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra), with a photo. =20

A Google search today turns up a few brief discography listings and CD=20
sellers' promotions of these recordings, along with a web site for the =
CD=20
manufacturer:

MDG (Musikproduktion Dabringshaus und Grimm) Web site http://www.mdg.de =

The MDG web site also lists a DVD audio version (6 channel playback) of =

Volume 2, as: Wind Concertos Vol. 2. MDG 901 0960-5 [Germany] 2+2+2=20
multichannel sound, 5.1 compatible 48kHz/16bit.

Evidently a few other recordings exist of various compositions by=20
Cartellieri, including a 1993 recording of three Divertimenti for winds =
that

also features Dieter Klocker.
