You don't mention whether you've already tried this, but I Googled on "Smythe patent
clarinet" and found a site for the Bates Collection of Musical Instruments at
Oxford.

The home page is at http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/BCMIPage.html

The list of clarinets in their collection is at:
http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/bat/clarinets.html

And a list of publications for sale is at:
http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk/bat/publicat.html

The listing of clarinets in the collection includes the following:

470 Boosey, London, cocus Smythe's Patent Bb clarinet, 3546 [Bate]
471 Boosey, London, cocus Smythe's Patent Bb clarinet, 4484 [Bate]

It sounds like someone at Bates might be able to provide more information. Or
perhaps they have a book that would be helpful.
