When I first met Gervase DePeyer at one of the "National Clarinet
Clinics" at the U of Denver, he was carrying his clarinets in a suitcase,
with each half of each clarinet wrapped up in an old blanket. Didn't seem
to affect his playing, which was great.

Not that I'm recommending this over a good sturdy case!
