When I bought an R13 in a Paris music store in 1974 all the clarinets were
stored in a room that looked more like a vault and all were simply wrapped
in newspaper. It was temperature and humidity controlled. They simply sat on
a shelf inside.

When I questioned the owner about this (who had hand picked all of them at
the buffet factory) he simply told me that they stored better that way and
when sold, you have a choice of which case you wanted, single or double, and
what style.

So they had a similar way of thinking that the case was an option.

music store that sold clarinets. I played a few of them and was told by the
owner that all clarinets are sold without cases. The case was an extra price
option. >>
