Dear Frank,
When I started practicing this way, I had no idea that it would
lead to memorization. Over the years I had lost the ability to play an
etude from start to finish without "breaking down" or making a mistake.
I asked Jon Manasse to give me a lesson on preparing a piece for
performance and he taught me to practice this way. Lelia, if you are out
there, I am talking about not only memorizing a piece, but being able to
play it from beginning to end without faltering. I personally cannot
start at the end when trying to prepare something to be performed for
the public. I also listened to Jon practice for a long time, and he
plays passages so slowly that you would think he was a beginner rather
than the world class clarinetist that he is, then he'll go into the
"repeat" mode as soon as he hits a difficult measure that he isn't
completely happy with. I guess I'm saying that memorization is an added
bonus to good preparation of a piece of music. ANNIE
