As a former "string" player (guitar, fretless bass guitar) I can say with
certainty that _I_ always avoided scales with open strings because open
strings by their very nature are uncontrollable - "what you hear is what you
get". But most of the time I could avoid open strings by playing a different
position - only in particular instances where you actually wanted to or at
the extremes of (low) range did you have no choice except to play an open
string.
