Thanks, Ken, for this link. If you click the link at the bottom of the
article (which is quite short) you get back to the table of contents for
that issue of the journal, and, indented under the listing for the
article, is a link to a page with the three pages of the manuscript in
Osborne's hand. It's fascinating to see it, and some of the changes from
the published version.

There are also one or two other articles in various editions of the IDRS
Journal. I have them written down someplace on my desk, but have never
gotten around to asking my double reed colleagues to hunt for the issues
required.

In Jim Gillespie's book of annotated solo clarinet repertoire (a valuable
resource) there is a note from the composer about the piece, and his
transcription of it for clarinet. Also very interesting.

I use this piece a lot with students to work on certain phrasing issues,
and I'm always amused to consider that the title (at least for clarinet)
is "Rhapsody" and the performance direction is "rhapsodically", yet there
is literally a marking for every note dictating tempo, dynamic, etc. Not
very free, but it needs to sound improvised!
