If you don't have it set to scan your email, it can only detect things
_after_ they've started causing some damage. I'm not sure how good the older
copies are at scanning email.

With the rapid evolution of viruses, I heartily recommend getting a new
version of anti-virus software that scans incoming and outgoing mail, along
with updating itself on a regular basis.
