Question for those with more computer knowledge than I have:

I am currently running Norton Antivirus software on my computer. It's a
several year old copy that I got from a friend, but I update the virus
definitions every couple of weeks. Over the past 6 months I've gotten two
viruses (or two copies of the same virus) that didn't do any particular
damage, but deposited a little file (that I assume would have caused damage
if I opened it) in every one of my folders. The problem is that when I do
a virus scan of my whole computer, Norton doesn't detect anything. The only
way I can get it to detect the virus is if I click directly on the virus
file itself. This, for obvious reasons, is not helpful. Is my copy of
Norton defective? Are there certain viruses that can evade Norton
scans? Should I buy a newer version? Any help you could give would be
appreciated.

Sorry for the non-clarinet related post, but I would feel awful if I were
to be one of the ones spreading viruses through the list.
