This can be caused by a torn covering on a felt pad (sometimes hard to see
without taking the key off to get a better look). Water can get in through
even a slight opening and swell the pad enough to interfere with it's
sealing against the hole. Next day it's dried out and the problem seems to
be gone.

But the original writer said he had even switched instruments around. The
only thing that, from his post, sounded like it was not changed was the
barrel, which someone else already noted (could *the barrel* have developed
a crack?). Another thing that *could* cause a disabled right hand section is
a slight misalignment of the bridge keys over the center joint. It's
possible to set them in such a way that the pad above the r.h. first finger
won't close. Of course, again, for it to have happened with two different
instruments, they would both have had to be misaligned - an unlikelihood
unless carelessness on the first instrument were compounded by panic when
setting up the other one.

Or, maybe a disgruntled colleague...
