My most successful way of conveying the idea of vibrato: pronounce the
syllable "vah." Do it periodically, as in va-va-va-va-va-va. It usually
takes only a few minutes to make it work, and then much longer to get it
under control. If one decides to experiment with vibrato, one of the main
cautions is that it must not become habitual. In other words, make sure
that you can always "turn it off" when the occasion demands.
