Dear List: While practicing my Bb clarinet today, the tones suddenly
started coming out as doubles. In other words, there was a phantom tone
that sounded along with each tone that I fingered. This phenomenon
occurred over the entire range of the instrument. I tried to stop the
effect by pushing on rods, keys, etc., but to no avail. I even changed
mouthpieces, reeds, and ligatures, but the double tones prevailed until
I walked a few steps away from my stand. As soon as I did this, the
double tones disappeared. I could not reproduce this effect again until
I returned to my stand. Have I discovered the secret of multiphonics? Is
it related to the curse of Sneezy? What do you think caused the double
tones?
