Gary,
I may be able to top that one.
While in a college history class we were studying "The National Labor
Relations Act of 1935" also known as "The Wagner Act."
I raised my hand to answer his question about the name of this act and you
guessed it.
I pronounced it with the German "V" sound as in Richard Wagner.
The professor chuckled and said "Mr. Henson you've been listening to too
much opera."

with real
life. When I was in college, I was talking to a bunch of my classmates about
a class project we were doing which involved fast food restaurants. We were
talking about that food bar in the center of the restaurant, you know, the
BUH-FAY. And while I normally pronounce it that way when talking about food
bars, for some reason while sort of talking out loud in a class discussion,
I called it, you guessed it, a BOO-FAY, like the clarinet brand. I only said
it once that way, but for some reason it struck a couple of people as the
funniest thing they had ever heard. I never did get their attention back. >>
