Dear Mark

I heard that we're all going to be required to learn all the woodwind
instruments in order to be able to continue posting on this list. I must beg
you to reconsider. While I currently play clarinet and saxophone and intend
to take up flute if I can ever get my schedule freed up a bit because so
many of the jazz books require it from time to time, I frankly have very
little interest in the double reeds. And really, Mark, the way you keep
bringing up the bassoon is a little insidious. Why should I spend years
studying an instrument that has one concerto in its repertoire, and looks
like an 18th century rocket launcher?

Furthermore, when you consider all the different variations within the main
woodwind instrument families, the sheer financial investment, not to mention
storage space, I think you should realize that not all of us live in a
warehouse. I already have 2 Bb clarinets (well, three, counting a Bundy I
loaned to a student and hope never to see again), an A, an Alto sax, a
tenor, and have a bari sax that lives with me, but we're just friends. Just
to stock up on the clarinets I need to meet this silly new requirement of
yours (not to mention the "no-transpose" rule I keep hearing about), I'll
need an Ab, Eb, C, Alto, Bass (1 in Bb and 1 in A), and Contrabass. Frankly,
I think I'll be tapped out long before I get to the Contrabassoon, let alone
the English horn.

Concerned,

Gary
