Ironically, one of the main problems I've noticed in students of mine who
used anything like "anchor tonguing" was in fact that it was easier for them
in careless moments to produce a slap-tongue effect. I'm not sure that the
bang you get with slap-tonguing comes from the reed hitting the mouthpiece,
as Fernando described. I've always thought (with no high technology imaging
devices to prove it) that the sound comes from the suction created against
the reed with the hollow of your tongue that forms if you use the middle of
the tongue carelessly. (Or deliberately to create the effect). When the
suction releases, the "pop" happens.
