Tony Pay, Karl Krelove and David Niethamer have all commented on orchestral
"C" clarinet parts being supplied in transposed versions for Bb clarinet,
with the original C part not present. We were recently given the Bizet
"Symphony in C" in one of my groups, and the clarinet parts are for Bb
clarinets in the written key of C!

I thought this a bit strange, as I expected a C clarinet part in the key of
C or a Bb part in the key of D. I looked at a bassoon part - it was also in
the key of C. I'm used to more modern parts being written without key
signature, but this seemed unusual for the time, apparently 1855. My part
has absolutely no trace of a publisher's name on it - totally anonymous!

Does anyone know what Bizet actually asked for?

P. S. - My spell checker wanted to substitute "bidet" for Bizet", but I
insisted I was right and it finally gave up.
