I think I either sent my previous version prematurely (hate when that
happens)

Anyway - MD definitely the way to go. Shop carefully for the unit - it must
have a mic pickup (all of them are designed for a self-powered mic,
available from several sources, esp. Sony) and a gain control that you can
manually adjust. Sharps are easier to adjust than Sonys - some of the newer
Sonys allow adjusting gain while recording, but not all - most only allow
adjustment while paused.

I use a Sony ECM-DS70P microphone - pretty good stereo, given that the
pickups are in one housing -- because the pickups face opposite each other,
they do okay.

The mic, the placement, and the acoustics of the room will all be the weak
links of the recording, not the MD player.

My recordings are good enough that I have recorded practice sessions at
home, then started playing them back through my component stereo while I
cleaned and packed up my gear, then walked down the hall to get something,
and startled my wife because she thought I was still playing. :-)

www.minidiscussion.com for more info than a sane person should want on MDs.
