I agree. I've got a MiniDisc deck, and a Sure SM81 that a friend was kind
enough to buy for me (that's about a $300 mic). Then I run the audio over
to my Mac through an iMic and record with Sound Studio and can slow it down
without changing pitch. Helps alot.

I could just record straight to my computer, but i usually have it
downloading or something and don't like to have it doing something like
recording at the same time.

As for serious recording, unless you plan on using a pro studio alot, then
getting a home setup would probably be more expensive than it's worth.

But i'm no expert at recording. :-)

I think it's cheaper to work at home, personally. With a minidisc
recorder and a good mic, you essentially have a recording studio if you
have access to a computer with a USB jack and a CD burner.

My current set up ran $230 (I don't have a very good mic - the mighs are
far to dominant, but I paid 30 bucks at Radio Shack, and it works).
Eventually I'll shell out the $100-$200 for a better balanced mic.
