I think it's cheaper to work at home, personally. With a minidisc
recorder and a good mic, you essentially have a recording studio if you
have access to a computer with a USB jack and a CD burner.

My current set up ran $230 (I don't have a very good mic - the mighs are
far to dominant, but I paid 30 bucks at Radio Shack, and it works).
Eventually I'll shell out the $100-$200 for a better balanced mic.
