That is true for me too- if I mess up, I can't just start from the mess up
point-

I think one of the problems many of us have is that we attempt to practice
way too fast. I think that it helps - at least it helps me - when I play
piano, to play the melody alone, without the accompanying hand (WHICHEVER
hand that is) and get it in my ear - play it slowly. Now, once one gets
into more difficult music, this becomes a bit more problematic. However, I
also have found using the metronome and playing the entire piece, forcing
myself to complete it, VERY slowly, to be of help, also. Tedious? Yes.
But, as I continue to play slowly, the mistakes become fewer, and I can inch
the metronome up...and eventually ditch it altogether.

This doesn't work for everyone, but it has helped me.
