I began playing the piano when I was three years old and to this day I
memorize the music... I can read and play at the same time, as I can
with my clarinet (which I also tend to memorize pieces on as well), but I
think it's because of the two lines of music that I memorize. It takes
just that much more work (hold your thumb and pointer finger about a
quarter of an inch apart) to play the piano simply because there are more
notes to see at once... hence, memorization helps. It's different with
improv (of course) but I don't think it has anything to do with you being
"such a rank beginner." :)
