The reason why Italy, more than almost any other country, used the full
Boehm B-flat clarinet was for the purpose of transposition as Bill
Hausmann suggests. However, that reason was driven by poverty because
the families of most young players could not afford an A clarinet.

There was a player at the Met who only owned one clarinet, and when I
asked him why he indicated that his family could not afford an A
clarinet so he mastered the art of transposition to an amazing degree.
