The point is that the appropriateness or otherwise of swearing in any
circumstances, including the circumstances of a forum like this, isn't
ultimately determined by 'Miss Manners', or by wanting to reveal a
'pretty' picture of oneself.

That amounts to 'wearing a tutu' to engage with the everyday world, and
as I said, it doesn't suit you, or indeed anyone.

The appropriateness is rather determined by who you're talking to, and
in what circumstances, and what you think being true to yourself amounts
to in those circumstances.

You can't be true to yourself while you're trying to take into account
what other bystanders may think of you, out of their own crazy ideas
about what are 'good' or 'bad' ways of expressing oneself.

I might, and I mostly do, come out here with words that fit in with
'Miss Manners' and 'the pretty picture of myself' theory of the world.
But that doesn't mean I'm acting out of those theories.

The same is true of playing, actually. It's why I strongly resist 'how
one ought to play the clarinet' theories of music. The contents of
those theories may be interimly useful, just as 'Miss Manners' may be
interimly useful; but they're both pretty useless for any serious
artistic endeavour, or any attempt at right living, when we make the
mistake of elevating them into organising principles.

The truth is, I don't really believe that;-)

Well.

Enough of me on this.

..... I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
