Hattners recommendations are excellent. One more thing I'd like to add:

Practice transposing ATONAL music. Then you'll REALLY think in C (or A or
Bb or whatever).

I took a huge leap in being able to transpose on site after I had to play
Schoenberg's Five Pieces for Orchestra (chamber version), and some Mahler
songs - which, while not atonal, were stretched tonality.
