Many thanks for these pointers!
I have now found an obituary.
Walter Lear (1894-1981) died at Hereford on
the 25th December 1981, aged 87
In the Boosey article 1957-8, he mentions the Bowen Quintet
I have now spoken to the obit writer
(who is playing the Mozart Requiem today)
and he'll get back to me tomorrow
