Grainger was a concert pianist. I think it was during WW1 that he wanted
to enlist in the army to help the war effort. So he picked up a sax and
learned "The Blue Bells of Scotland" well enough to get himself into a
military band. When they discovered that BBS was all he knew, supposedly
they switched him to mallet percussion. I got the story from someone who
knew his widow.
