I can't put my hands on my copy right now to cite anything specific, but my
first reaction is to suggest that the mezzo make some discreet editorial
adjustments in her part to bring the out-of-range passages into her voice.
Any way you do it you'll end up with something that is in some way edited.
Changing the entire key affects both the range and technical requirements of
both the clarinet part and the piano part, which is not merely
accompaniment. A few note changes in the soprano part might be all that are
needed to make the original version workable.

Does anyone know of an edition of Schubert's "Shepherd on the Rock" that has
been transposed down by several half steps? I have just made the
acquaintance of an excellent mezzo-soprano and would love to work with her
on this piece, but she can't get up to the high A's and Bb's. Thanks for
any suggestions. ---Richard Sankovich
