To add my $.02 - most of the comments have centered around the temperment
issue as a reason why all clarinets have intonation "issues."

Don't forget the small fact that if the tone holes were perfectly optimized
for one register, they would result in agonizingly bad intervals for the
others.

Which brings us back to listening, and having a setup which allows us enough
flexibility to make corrections, and knowing a few alternate fingerings...

Anyone tried making a slide clarinet? :-)
