Subj: [kl] Tuning vs. temperament
Date: Thu, 21 Mar 2002 00:05:42 -0500

I just noticed I've been mixing terminology indiscriminately - which, of
course, can lead to confusion:

temperament = how you build a scale (interval relationships)
tuning = how your instrument compares to that "tempered" scale (how close
you are to the frequency dictated by the temperament)

There are multiple temperaments - _that_ I think is causing the confusion.

A clarinet theoretically could be built completely in tune for a particular
temperament - which by definition would make it out of tune in any other
temperament.

Does that make it clearer?
