I did not denigrate Buffet clarinets. In fact, If I had the money to burn,
I would be interested in adding one to my collection. All I am suggesting
is that the R-13's reputation may somewhat exceed its actual capability.
This is not because of a lack of capability but due to overinflation of its
reputation. As I said, Buffet makes other models. Some of these even
incorporate corrections to certain known deficiencies inherent in the
R-13's design. Does Buffet make the "best" clarinets in the world? I
don't know. Maybe. Are they AMONG the top manufacturers of clarinets in
the world? Certainly. Is the R-13 the only clarinet a professional or
serious student should consider? Absolutely not. There really ARE other
choices out there. Get over it.
Just for the record, the store I work for DOES carry the R-13, in addition
to Selmer, Yamaha, and Leblanc products. And I work on salary, not commission.
