Pianos usually are tuned a little high (in anticipation of the strings
settling shortly after tuning takes place). However, I think what is being
said is that we tune to the instruments we are playing with more so than
trying to get everyone in tune with the tuning meter. If we did that, we'd
spend all of our lives searching for the illusive center of the pitch from
everyone. We tune to those we're playing with (or they tune to us, whatever
the case may be)...probably with one person tuning with the meter and then
having everyone else listen. It's sometimes more feasible to do a relative
tuning than trying to get an absolute tuning. If you're playing along
during the middle of a piece of music, though, and find that you are sharp
or flat to everyone else, it doesn't matter if you've hit the center of the
meter. You have to tune with everyone else. Also, you have to figure out
which part of the chord you are playing. If you're the third of the chord,
you should play a little lower on that particular pitch to get the chord
tones to sound right together. Tuning is certainly more complex than just
getting the needle into the center of the meter.
