Also, think of intonation is a relative thing. Are you in tune relative to
[fill in the blank]? When you play with piano, you need to play one way...
When you play with strings, you tune another way... When you play with
other winds, etc...
Last week, I had the privilege of doing a recording with Lorin Levee of the
LA Phil and he was playing with a string quartet. He plays a set of the
most beautiful clarinets I think I've ever heard. They are the
French-fingered Wurlitzers. The sound was even, rich, "dark," and
beautiful. When he played solo for me after the session, the scale was the
most even, in-tune scale I've heard on a clarinet. That said, there were a
couple notes where he had to adjust to the pitch of the strings. He was
very in tune, but even with a totally "in-tune" clarinet, he still had to
adjust.
I think that is what was meant...
