Well said, David. I play on a Buffet RC made in the mid 70's and it plays as well in tune and responds as well as any newer instruments I have played. I did notice some resopnse problems so I my tech sent the instrument to Naylor and had his treatment done on the bore and put Straubinger and new cork pads and the reponse is great again. I have a student that I recently started teaching who played badly out of tune on a Buffet that was made in the 60's which she bought from a music store that had repadded the instrument. I looked at the instrument and discovered that many of the pad heights were terrible. When we got that taken care of by using the right sized key corks and pads, the instrument played fine. Sometimes people think that the problem is the brand when it can me mechanical.

Like you said, David, the player has to take care of playing in tune. A better quality mechanically sound instrument makes it easier. Which brand depends on each players preference. There are great players playing and endorsing all the better brands. I like Toyotas, but there are a lot of people who have had great luck with all the other brands of cars. Instruments are the same.
