<<<I have heard of several people who have allergic reactions to cane reeds,

<<<and for them, synthetic reeds are a godsend. It is most unusual to have
<<<such a reaction to plastic, though!

I have the same problem with contact lens material and silicone. Even the
medical profession had a hard time believing it until I presented in the ER
with breathing difficulties and the culprit was found to be contacts.
Believe me, when you are having breathing difficulties and rash problems,
they start looking everywhere. Contacts lead to swollen, itchy, encrusted
eyes and then infection. Remove them and my problem disappears. When I had
my disc surgeries for my TM joints, a small silicone insert (not implant)
was used, supposedly until I could grow enough scar tissue to cushion the
bone. Breathing difficulties within ten minutes of insertion was enough to
get their attention. When an anesthetized patient has trouble breathing,
everyone in the room jumps. I spent four extra days in intensive care after
that one.
