Chuck, I laughed out loud when I read this. I too have made some weird reeds.

I made one once out of, get this, very thick CARDBOARD. It actually played for 10 minutes, until it got waterlogged and started to fall apart. The taste was also terrible!

Thank heavens for Arundo Donax, huh?
