The set designers had left lots of spare pine two-by-fours in the pit
area. The two clarinetists eventually started a challenge amongst
themselves: they would peel off a chunk of a two- by-four during the
overture and start to work on it with reed knives; if they could
successfully play the final applause music with a reed constructed from
that chunk, they won the bet for that night.

That's hilarious, Tim. I've worked for about 30 minutes (total) on my
tongue depressor. I'm not going to buy a book, but clearly there must
be some way to split or otherwise cut into the blank in a controlled
manner, thereby approaching the desired shape rapidly --- rather than
removing material one particle at a time.

Cheers,
Bill
