On my Legere's, the noticeable difference is that the edges are square and
quite sharp, compared to a more rounded edge with cane. Combined with the
tendency for the read to slip due to its smooth surface, I could see how
one's lip could be damaged over time. I have not played the Legere for
long enough at a time to notice it, myself.

Maybe slightly rounding the edges with sandpaper or rush would help.
