Since my last name is "Wright", I am used to jokes about last names.
(My middle initial is "O", and so my full initials are "WOW"!)
Nevertheless, I couldn't help wincing when the headline for the local
review of Tony & the AAM was:

"Clarinet solo was the Pay-off"

The reviewer praised Tony (as I'm sure most reviewers do) with many
superlatives, but the reviewer felt that parts of the Haffner and Figaro
overture were played too fast and didn't give the music or the artists
"time to sing."

I don't know about such things (truly, I don't), but I can't help
wondering if speed is another aspect of Mozart's music that has changed
over the years, and perhaps (?) the reviewer didn't realize this?. Was
it really played faster in those days?

Cheers,
Bill
