Subj: [kl] Vienna Philharmonic Concerts
Date: Thu, 14 Mar 2002 02:51:53 -0500

Those of us in Orange County, CA were blessed this week with three concerts
by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Bernard Haitink. Monday night
featured a glorious Bruckner 8th. Tuesday the orchestra played Mozart
"Haffner" Symphony, Berg's "Three Pieces", and a wonderful Schubert 9th.
Tonight (yes, I went to all three concerts) was Brahms "Haydn (Pleyel?)
Variations", Haydn "Symphony No.101" and
"Don Quixote" by Richard Strauss.

What wonderful playing! They now have five women in the ranks: 2nd
clarinet, 2nd bassoon, two violas, and one harp. What progress!! No
protests before the concert, like the last time they performed in the Los
Angeles area.

I noticed two things about the clarinets: (1) metal ligatures now, and (2)
one of the players was using both a rosewood Eb andBb/A. I wonder who makes
German/Austrian System rosewoods?
