On another list, several people have said that when you copy vinyl disks to
CD, you should use a USB audio input, since sound board electronics are
noisy.
The quote is:

>> If you're converting priceless tape and vinyl recordings to AIFF format
for preserving on CDs, use USB audio instead of your sound card. On a
Macintosh, use the iMic
<http://www.griffintechnology.com/audio/imic_main.html>. On a PC, you have
many choices though none as elegant as the iMic; try the USB Gear Adapter
<http://www.usbgear.com/usa/item_53.html>. <<

Ben Maas -- Any thoughts on this? Are you familiar with the USB Gear
Adapter? Is there another you recommend? As a general matter, can I get
better CDs by using a USB input than by plugging into my oldish SoundBlaster
card?

Also, I have a bunch of 78s, including some acoustics, that need non-RIAA
equalization (none at all for the acoustics). Can you recommend a decent
multi-curve preamplifier that is less than stratospheric in cost? Is there
software that does the same thing?

Many thanks.

Ken Shaw
