Ashley,

I hate to tell you this, but when I lived in Atlanta,
if I needed Clarinet things, I ordered mailorder or
traveled. I really disliked the stores there for
clarinet and saxophone instruments and accessories.
They remind me of Sam Ash here in NY, because there
are no woodwind people at the shops, only guitar
players and drummers. Not a good combination when
getting a wind instrument and need help picking out
the instrument.

Do you have a teacher in Atlanta? They might can
suggest to you a place to go in the area. If you don't
have a teacher and are buying a new instrument, invest
in lessons first, and then look for an instrument.
Laura Ardan and Ted Gurch from the ASO are great
teachers, as are other teachers in the area. The
lessons would be a better use of the money first
before picking out an instrument, because you want to
be in good shape playingwise before trying out
instruments, as this will effect your decision making
process for hte clarinet you choose.

If I still lived in Atlanta, and I was going to spend
over $1000 on a new instrument, I would get a flight
to either Chicago or New York and try out the
instruments at International Music Suppliers in
Chicago or Woodwind and Brasswind in New York. You
should be able to get a plane ticket for less than
$150 for either city from Atlanta, and if you arrange
ahead of time with Lisa at Internation Music
Suppliers, or with Jonathan or Laurie at Woodwind and
Brasswind, they can have LOTS of instruments and
mouthpieces to try out when you get there. You could
make a round trip in a day on a plane, and take care
of the instrument purchase from a reputable company
with GREAT prices and GREAT selection. It would be
well worth the $150 or less to Chicago or New York to
go to a shop with selection and knowledgable people.

Drop me a line privately if you might need more
information on the plane thing. I have done purchases
from Atlanta exactly as I just detailed when I still
lived there.

By the way...any of you from Atlanta, this is for you.
Why can't Atlanta have at least one GOOD music store
with clarinets? Is there one I don't know about? I go
to Patrick McFarland and Paul Covey in Atlanta for my
oboe needs STILL. It surprises me that Atlanta can
support *2* oboe shops that are great, but none for
the rest of the woodwinds.
