Hi,
If you are wanting theory to start at a fairly basic level, then to run
thro` to starting diploma level, I would venture to suggest that just a book
on
harmony will not cover all what one needs. In the U.K. we have an Associated
Board of the Royal Schools of Music. They run examinations world wide for
instrumentalists, and for theory. Their two theory books are indeed
excellent. They are both written by Professor Eric Taylor M.A. D. Mus.
(Oxon). They cover all aspects of theory including rhythm, pitch, scales,
keys, words, intervals, transposition, triads, chords, phrases,
articulation, ornaments; and book 2 covers voices, non harmony notes, tonal
harmony, chromatics, melody, orchestral instruments, percussion/piano;
before the tonal period, and modern developments. They are still in use (and
will be
for a long time) even tho` my 10 year old prices may have changed - £2.95
and
£4.95. ABRSM has a web site where you may order these from. I thoroughly
recommend them both to anyone and everyone. Web site is
www.abrsm@-----.uk
and look up their publishing (for sale) pages. It may also be possible to
order these
books from your local retailer tho`. They are "The AB Guide to Music Theory"
Best of luck.
Tony W.
