Subj: [kl] barrel removal
Date: Thu, 7 Mar 2002 12:25:03 -0500

The problem of stuck barrels comes from mositure at the joint swelling both
the tenon and the socket. Applying heat will only causes both sections to
swell further and could cause the upper joint to crack down to the register
tube.

I have developed a relatively safe way to remove barrels without damaging
the joint or the barrel.

You will need:

A vise
A section of leather belt (at least 10") .The belt should have a good
width - over 1"
A latex glove

Cut a strip of the glove about 3" long and about 1" wide. Make a loop in the
belt placing it loosely in the vise. Insert the strip of latex and then
place the barrel in the loop. Pull the loop snug around the barrel and
tighten the vise. The barrel should now be held firmly by the loop (latex
layer is between the belt and the barrel).

Now with both hands grasping the joint (and not in position to bend any
keys) twist the joint until the barrel comes free. This may take some
effort!

Once the barrel is free, allow both joints to dry for about two days and
then adjust the barrel socket so that it does not fit so tightly on the
tenon.
