Subj: [kl] Bass clarinet pads with rivets
Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2002 09:00:06 -0500

Another question from the bass clarinet newby: The pads on my Werlitzer (=
Vito?) are tan leather, and seem in reasonable shape. The one that fell
out had been glued with some transparent glue (probably gun glue) and was
easily replaced with heat. But I notice that most of the big pads have
rivets in the center. Is this just how these pads are made; the rivet
keeping the large skin from drooping, and the whole assembly held into the
cup with glue as usual? Or does the rivet hold the pad into the cup?

You can see how new I am to the bass clarinet world - I have never seen one
of these pads off the instrument, and I am loathe to attempt to remove a
working one just to see.
