Dear Listers,

Just wanted to publicly bubble over the Academy of Ancient Music's concert
at Orchestra Hall in Chicago last Wednesday evening (Tony Pay's
participation in this group gives my post "list relevance" doesn't it?).

The all-Mozart program consisted of:

Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, K. 492
Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467
Robert Levin, Fortepiano (The instrument used was built in Ann
Arbor, MI!)
Three Dances from the Ballroom Scene of Don Giovanni, K. 527
March in D Major, K. 408, No. 2 (Haffner)
Symphony No. 35 in D Major, K. 385 (Haffner)

Even though the clarinets didn't have as much to do in this performance, it
was fun to note the curved neck basset clarinet Tony was using, and hear the
few slightly juicy passages afforded Tony and his cohort, Jane Booth.

While the entire performance was brilliant, especially riveting was Robert
Levin's technically stunning, musically mesmerizing treatment of the
Concerto.

Christopher Hogwood and Co. have a grueling U.S. tour schedule which can be
checked out at www.aam.co.uk. For sheer musical delight, don't miss this
group if they come to a venue within your travel range. Perhaps you might
get to say hello to Tony if you're luckier than I was. By the way,
additional compositions are on the repertoire list, so the program will vary
throughout the tour.

Incidentally, I'd be happy to scan and send as attachments (to individuals
only, of course), the excellent commentary by Christopher Hogwood, Neal
Zaslaw, and Robert Levin, on the performance practice of Mozart's day, plus
program notes on each of the works performed, to anyone interested. Please
contact me privately at k.krive@-----.

Regards to the List,

Kent Krive
