With a lot of luck... :-) It really depends upon what part of the world you
are working in. Here in LA, there are contractors that contact individual
musicians for the sessions. Occasionally, a composer or orchestrator will
insist on specific people, but mostly it is sort of a "standard set."
Around here, you have people like Gary Bovier, Gary Gray, Jim Kanter, and a
few others playing principal clarinet on the big dates. For the smaller
(non-union) dates, the composers usually find all the players so if you want
work, get to know composers.

I would imagine it is a similar scene in Seattle, San Francisco, and New
York.

In London, sometimes the London Symphony is hired for scoring dates (For
example, Star Wars), but there is also a large freelance group of musicians
that play dates at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst.

Also, these days, I'm seeing things like the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
credited (Lord of the Rings), and other groups as well.
