Dear Robert,
About 2 weeks ago I particpated in Dr. Denise Schmidt's Appalacian
Clarinet Retreat, and she played a great piece with the Mars Hill Wind
Symphony. They didn't have programs at the retreat, but I do remember
that the name of the piece was "X", and some of the thematic material
was borrowed from Curt Cobain, the now deseased member of NIRVANA. I
guess it was supposed to be a sort of "tongue-in-cheek" usage of heavy
metal riffs. I don't listen to that kind of music, but the composer did
a great job of creating an awesome contemporary piece. One movemement
sounded like it could have been written by Eric Dolphy, the great jazz
bass clarinetist who died back in the 60's, based on the sound of the
syncopated riffs. I do believe that Dr. Diane Cawein, clarinet professor
at the U. of Nebraska in Lincoln has also performed the piece. I think
that Dr. Denise is going to be performing the piece again very soon at
the College Educators National Convention (I'm not sure if that's the
exact name of the organization) in Atlanta very soon. Anyhow, the piece
got my attention. I know that Carol Talbot, on our Klarinet List is
familiar with the composition since she is a member of the Mars Hill
Wind Symphony. ANNIE
