Naxos Audio Books have put out a 4 CD set
"The History of Classical Music" NA414012,(1997).
This is a narration with music examples
CD1 Early, Medieval and Renaissance
CD2 Baroque and Classical
CD3 Romantic
CD4 20th Century
The depth of the investigation is not great,
but you might hear some of the music, used
as examples, for the first time.
It is much cheaper than Norton
There is a set of CDs/cassettes and
the NAWM (Norton Anthology of Western Music)
that accompany the supertext, edited by
Donald Grout (1902-1987) and Claude Palisca (1920-2001),
"A History of Western Music" (W. W. Norton)
NAWM (2nd Ed) and the CDs/cassettes are
described on the inside of the rear dust cover
of the hardback edition of the 4th edition.
The 5th edition was the latest and possibly the last.
