At the Olympics opening ceremony in Atlanta in 1996
all of the music that was on the broadcast of the
Opening Ceremonies was prerecorded except for Jesse
Norman's vocal part in her song (it was prerecorded,
but she did it live anyway at the ceremonies and the
dress rehearsal, which was taped in case of rain at
the official ceremonies. She was live with the
orchestra and prerecorded tracks to accompany her.)
All of the orchestral stuff for the entire show was
prerecorded, as was the chorus (which I sang in) and
the parts David Foster played on piano, as well as
Celine Dion's vocals for their song together. The
chorus sang live during the ceremonies, but only the
people withing about 100 feet could hear the actual
live singing, since we weren't miked. The rest of the
sound was from the tapes on the PA systems and the TV
telecast. It's not really practical to mike 400 people
in a chorus, and 150 in an orchestra in an outdoor
performance where som much more is going on in
addition to the playing.

I remember that one of the rehearsals ran long, and
the symphony members under union contracts were not
required to stay. They left in the middle of a piece,
and the music didn't stop. It was quite amusing
singing with an orchestra that was progressively
leaving while the music played on. It was over 95
degrees for our rehearsals, and at one point, the
temperature stands hit 110 degrees during a day
rehearsal (and that's NOT a dry heat!) I'm not sure
what the instrumentalists used for the instruments for
the opening ceremonies, but this would have been a
great time to bring out the marching instruments.

It was definitely a great experience nontheless. One
highlight for me was getting to explain to a Canadian
backstage before the opening ceremonies what pork
rinds were (they had pork rinds at the concession
stands, along with boiiled peanuts and moonpies.)
